Description
Baked apple cider donuts are cakey, loaded with flavor, quick and simple to make. It's a delicious breakfast for any crisp fall morning. These donuts are coated in a cinnamon spiced sugar topping and pair well with a warmed cup of apple cider or hot cup of coffee.

For the donuts
- 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) apple cider
- 2 cups (240 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 large egg (50 g)
- 3/4 cup (150 g) dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (28 g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk, at room temperature
For the topping
- 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 6 tablespoons (85 g) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- In a small saucepan, bring apple cider to a gentle boil and allow to simmer over medium heat until reduced to 1/2 cup (120 ml), about 20-25 minutes. Set aside to cool.
- Preheat oven to 350°F/177°C. Spray a doughnut pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
For the donuts
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
- In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, brown sugar, melted butter, milk and reduced apple cider until well combined.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until combined. Do not over mix.
- Spoon batter (or use a pastry bag to pipe batter) into donut wells, filling until 2/3 of the way full.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the donuts comes out clean. Allow donuts to cool slightly before adding topping.
For the topping
- In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
- Dip each donut into butter and then generously into the sugar mixture. Best served immediately.
Notes
- Storing: Cover tightly and store at room temperature up to 2 days. Alternatively freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in refrigerator and serve at room temperature.
